The Battle

History & Significance

Edmund I, having lost the Five Boroughs after Aethelstan's death, retook them in 942–943 after the deaths of Olaf Guthfrithson and his successor Olaf Sihtricson. The Chronicle records Edmund's liberation of the Five Boroughs in a famous poem, which frames it as freeing English Danes from Norse bondage — recognising a distinction between long-settled Danelaw populations and new Norse overlords.
