History & Significance

Bradford was the most contested town in the West Riding during the early Civil War. The Parliamentary-supporting cloth workers famously defended it with improvised fortifications including spiked wool bales as barricades. The town changed hands several times before the Royalists finally secured it after Adwalton Moor. The Bradford clothworkers' defence is a celebrated example of civilian armed resistance in the Civil War.
