The failure to advance further — and to try to free Mary Queen of Scots from Sheffield Castle — was the decisive moment of the rebellion. The rebels then retreated northward, their forces melting away. The failure demonstrated the paralysis that afflicted Tudor rebels when faced with crown determination.
