History & Significance

The second Doncaster confrontation ended the main Pilgrimage. Norfolk, acting beyond his instructions, granted a full pardon and promised a Parliament at York to address the rebels demands. The rebels dispersed in triumph. Henry VIII privately regarded the pardon as forced and waited for a pretext to renege — which Bigod provided in January 1537.
