The Battle

History & Significance

After Aethelflaed's campaigns in the Midlands, the Viking kingdom of Jorvik faced growing English pressure. Ragnall ua Imair seized York in 919 after defeating the Northumbrians at the Battle of Corbridge. Despite English advances south of the Humber, Yorkshire remained firmly Viking. The contest for York would continue until Athelstan finally took control in 927.
