Aylesbury was secured by Parliamentary forces early in the Civil War, becoming the Parliamentary county town of Buckinghamshire. Sir William Drake and local Parliamentary gentry organised the town\'s defence against Royalist cavalry from Oxford. Buckinghamshire was a strongly Parliamentary county, providing significant financial and military support to the cause throughout the war. The securing of Aylesbury prevented the Royalists from outflanking Parliamentary positions on the northern approach to London and controlled the road from Oxford northward.
