Ine of Wessex defeated Geraint of Dumnonia in 710, the last king of the post-Roman British kingdom covering Devon and Cornwall. This battle extended West Saxon power deeper into the southwest. The Britons retained Cornwall but Devon increasingly came under Anglo-Saxon settlement and rule.
