The second siege of Newark in 1644 was the second of three Parliamentary attempts to reduce this key Royalist stronghold. Newark was one of the most strategically important Royalist garrisons in the Midlands, sitting astride the Great North Road. Parliamentary forces established siegeworks but the approach of Prince Rupert\'s relieving force caused them to abandon the siege. Newark\'s continued resistance tied down Parliamentary resources and protected Royalist communications throughout the Midlands war.
Parliamentary: Midlands forces and Eastern Association contingent. Royalist: Newark garrison plus Prince Rupert\'s relief force
