The Battle

History & Significance

Edinburgh Castle surrendered to Edward I in June 1296 after the siege artillery — recently used at Berwick — was moved into position. The castle held out for only a few days before the constable submitted. Edward installed a substantial English garrison and stripped the castle of Scottish royal regalia and administrative records, including the Stone of Destiny, which were transported to Westminster as symbols of conquest.
