History & Significance

Viroconium Cornoviorum (Wroxeter) became one of the largest cities in Roman Britain, with a superb civic centre including a forum and basilica. The legionary fortress preceded the civilian town — the army was here before the town existed. The Cornovii, whose territory covered modern Shropshire and Cheshire, offered limited resistance and became one of the most urbanised British tribes.
