The Battle

History & Significance

Scotland's greatest military disaster. James IV invaded England as an ally of France while Henry VIII was in France. His army was trapped on Flodden Field and destroyed. James IV was killed — the last British monarch to die in battle. With him died 10,000 Scots including most of the nobility. The mournful song "Flowers of the Forest" commemorates the dead.
