History & Significance

Before the main battle at Maidstone, Parliamentary garrisons at Sittingbourne and Faversham were overcome or evacuated as the Kentish rising gathered momentum. The east Kent towns provided men and resources to the growing Royalist army. The rapid collapse of Parliamentary authority across most of Kent showed the depth of resentment at military rule and heavy taxation.
