History & Significance

The Barbarian Conspiracy of 367 AD — a coordinated assault by Picts, Scots, Attacotti and Saxons — overwhelmed the Roman defences simultaneously. Nectaridus, the comes litoris Saxonici (Count of the Saxon Shore), was killed — probably in the vicinity of his southeast command. The Saxon Shore forts including Lympne (Lemanis), one of the most important on the Kent/Sussex coast, were attacked. Theodosius the Elder was sent to restore order in a campaign lasting into 369 AD.

Forces Involved

Saxons: c. 800–1,500. Roman garrison (Lemanis): c. 300–500.
