History & Significance

Athelstan move into Northumbria in 927 following Sihtric death was swift enough to prevent Guthfrith establishing himself. The approach through Yorkshire showed the speed of English military movement. Guthfrith initially took refuge with Constantine of Scotland but was eventually handed over to Athelstan. The speed of English annexation of Northumbria demonstrated the military capability that would prove decisive at Brunanburh.
