History & Significance

Edward I reached Elgin in July 1296 on his triumphant circuit of Scotland, receiving submissions and installing English constables in the northern castles. Elgin Castle, gateway to Moray and the north, was occupied as the northernmost significant English garrison position. The Elgin occupation symbolised the completeness of Edward's 1296 conquest; he had traversed the entire kingdom from Berwick to Elgin and imposed English administration throughout.
