Yarmouth Castle, begun in 1547 under Henry VIII and completed under Edward VI, was the last of the Device Forts to be built and the most sophisticated in its use of an angled bastion — the first true angle bastion in England. Together with Hurst Castle directly opposite on the Hampshire shore, it created a deadly crossfire at the western entrance to the Solent, ensuring that no enemy fleet could enter from the west without passing through interlocking fields of artillery fire.
