History & Significance

The Mercian Register records Aethelflaed built a burh at Stafford in the summer of 913. Stafford controlled the upper Trent valley and guarded the routes into the Danish territory around Derby and Nottingham. The town was later to be the shire town of Staffordshire. Its construction as a planned burh showed Aethelflaed systematic approach to fortifying the Mercian frontier before launching the offensive into the Five Boroughs.
