The Battle

History & Significance

West Cowes blockhouse, built in 1539, was the western half of the twin-blockhouse system guarding the Medina estuary. The West Cowes structure would eventually grow into Cowes Castle, now the home of the Royal Yacht Squadron. The 1539 muster established a permanent military presence at this critical anchorage point for the first time.
