History & Significance

One of a series of battles between Edmund Ironside and Cnut in 1016. Edmund caught Cnut's army at Otford and routed it, driving the Danes back across the Thames into Sheppey. This victory was part of Edmund's remarkable series of counter-attacks that made 1016 one of the most militarily dramatic years in English history, ending only with the catastrophe of Assandun.
