History & Significance

Elements of the great Danish fleet that sacked Canterbury and London in 851 struck at Romney Marsh, burning settlements at Lymne (Lemanis). The shallow creeks gave Viking longships ideal access. The raid was part of the 851 campaign in which Athelstan of Kent also won the naval Battle of Sandwich.
