History & Significance

The Northumbrian revolt against Tostig Godwinson, Harold's brother, in October 1065 had profound consequences for the Norman Conquest. The rebels murdered Tostig's men and marched south. Harold brokered a compromise that exiled Tostig — infuriating his brother. Tostig allied with Harald Hardrada of Norway, contributing directly to the invasion that Harold had to defeat at Stamford Bridge, exhausting his army before Hastings.
