The Battle

History & Significance

The months between Bruces landing in February 1307 and his victory at Loudoun Hill in May were a critical guerrilla phase. Operating in the terrain he knew best — the hills and forests of his own Carrick earldom — he avoided pitched battle with English cavalry while gathering strength. He fought several small skirmishes against English patrols, demonstrated to local people that he was a credible force, and attracted recruits. By May he had sufficient confidence and men to meet Pembroke in the field at Loudoun Hill.
