History & Significance

The Earl of Mar, who had succeeded the assassinated Regent Lennox, died at Stirling in October 1572 of what contemporaries described as grief and worry — he was said to have been devastated by the failures of the siege of Edinburgh Castle and the continuing civil war. His death triggered another brief succession crisis as the King's party scrambled to appoint Morton as the new regent. Morton's assumption of the regency brought a more ruthless and effective government style. Mar's short regency had been characterised by military paralysis; Morton's would end the war within a year.
