History & Significance

The arrest and later execution of the Earl of Essex ended the last serious military challenge to Elizabethan rule. Essex had expected London to rise for him but the citizens stood firm for the queen. Penned back into Essex House by Lord Admiral Nottingham he surrendered within hours. His execution ended any last hope of the Devereux faction and Elizabeth spent her remaining two years without challenge.
