The Louth muster on 2 October 1536 was the spark of the entire Pilgrimage of Grace. Parishioners fearing dissolution of their church seized the diocesan registrar and armed themselves. Within days the rising had spread to Horncastle, Caistor and Lincoln, gathering perhaps 10,000 men. It was the largest popular revolt of Tudor England.
