The Battle

History & Significance

After the catastrophic defeat at Brunanburh, survivors of Olaf Guthfrithson's Norse fleet retreated to their ships and fled south through the Humber estuary. The Old English poem records survivors shamefully retreating to Dublin, leaving five young kings and seven earls dead. English forces harried the retreat to the coast. The Norse ships that had come from Dublin departed under constant pressure, ensuring no rallying point could be established in Northumbria.
