History & Significance

Royalist forces in Breconshire conducted several skirmishes against Parliamentary parties attempting to extend control south from Brecon town in 1645. The rugged Brecon Beacons terrain favoured Royalist guerrilla operations. Parliamentary attempts to cut Royalist communications between south Wales and the Severn valley garrisons were contested by mounted Royalist detachments in the hills above Brecon.
