History & Significance

During the First Bishops War, the Covenanting army under Leslie advanced to Berwick-upon-Tweed and skirmished with English border troops. The Covenanters were better organized and motivated than Charles I hastily assembled English force. The resulting Pacification of Berwick was little more than a truce — the deeper conflict would resume and escalate into the Second Bishops War in 1640.
