History & Significance

Burgh Castle (Gariannonum) near Great Yarmouth was the most important Saxon Shore fort in East Anglia, guarding the estuary of the Yare and the southern approaches to the Wash. It is one of the best-preserved Roman forts in Britain; its massive walls with bastions for artillery towers still stand. The fort sheltered a mixed garrison of infantry and cavalry and supported naval operations in the North Sea.
