Following Edmund's death, the Danes consolidated control of East Anglia. The territory became part of the Danelaw under Guthrum after Alfred's campaigns. The Danish kingdom of East Anglia persisted until 917. Danish settlement left deep marks in Norfolk and Suffolk place names ending in -by, -thorpe and -toft that survive to this day.
