History & Significance

The Earl of Huntly led a force to Donibristle House in Fife — home of the young James Stewart, Earl of Moray — allegedly on a royal commission but actually to murder a rival. Moray tried to escape when the house was set on fire but was cut down on the beach. His death inspired the ballad 'The Bonnie Earl o' Moray' — one of the most famous Scottish ballads. His mother reportedly displayed his mutilated body before the king. Huntly escaped punishment, adding to the popular outrage.
