History & Significance

David I of Scotland took advantage of the Anarchy to seize Carlisle, Cumberland and parts of Northumberland, claiming them for Scotland. His Galwegian troops committed notorious atrocities — impaling children, enslaving civilians. The invasion was checked at the Battle of the Standard but the northern counties remained in Scottish hands until 1157 when Henry II recovered them by threatening force.
