History & Significance

Beornwulf successor Ludeca marched into East Anglia to avenge his predecessor and was also killed there along with five ealdormen. The loss of two kings and major nobles in two years fatally weakened Mercia. Wiglaf who succeeded Ludeca was soon expelled by Ecgberht of Wessex, confirming West Saxon supremacy.
