History & Significance

Cuthred of Wessex defeated Aethelbald of Mercia at Burford in Oxfordshire. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that Cuthred fought against Aethelbald and put him to flight. This rare West Saxon victory was short-lived as Mercian dominance was restored after Aethelbald murder in 757 and Offa seizure of power.
