History & Significance

Edward the Elder's systematic reconquest of the Danelaw culminated in 917 when the Danish army of East Anglia and the garrison of Cambridge submitted. Edward had built burhs across the Midlands and then advanced into East Anglia; facing fortified towns they could not besiege, the Danes submitted. This reunited East Anglia with the English kingdom after nearly fifty years of Danish rule.
