History & Significance

Dougal MacDowells of Galloway was one of the most implacable enemies of Robert the Bruce. His family had been loyal to the English and to John Balliol. When Bruce returned from exile in 1307, MacDowells attacked him repeatedly as he tried to consolidate in Carrick. Bruce defeated these attacks and gradually pacified the region. MacDowells eventually fled to Ireland after his power was broken. Bruce's ability to defeat Galloway opposition was essential to securing his base before engaging the English.
