The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that in 914, Aethelflaed built a burh (fortified town) at Warwick. The establishment of such defensive positions was part of a systematic strategy to contain and eventually reconquer the Danelaw. Warwick's position on the Avon, controlling routes between the south Midlands and the Danelaw, made it strategically essential. The modern town layout still follows the lines of the Saxon burh.
