History & Significance

Burrough-on-the-Hill is one of the largest Iron Age hillforts in Leicestershire, with ramparts enclosing nearly 12 acres. Under Ostorius Scapula's weapons-confiscation policy, such defended positions would have required reduction. Archaeological evidence of late Iron Age occupation followed by Roman-period material suggests a transition that may not have been entirely peaceful. The fort overlooks the Eye Brook valley — a strategic route.
