The Battle

History & Significance

After taking York, Athelstan moved against Bamburgh, the stronghold of the Northumbrian high-reeves who had maintained semi-independence under the Danes. The fortress on its dramatic basalt outcrop above the North Sea was the ancient royal seat of Bernicia. Athelstan compelled the garrison and local lord Ealdred to submit, integrating Northumbria into his unified kingdom.
