History & Significance

After Ellendun, Ecgberht sent his son Aethelwulf with a large force to bring Kent, Surrey, Sussex and Essex under West Saxon control. The Mercian sub-king Baldred was expelled. The men of Kent, Surrey, Sussex and Essex submitted to Ecgberht gladly, as the Chronicle records, reversing decades of Mercian domination in the southeast.
