The Battle

History & Significance

Sir Thomas Wyatt's rebellion against Mary I's marriage to Philip of Spain began in Kent. Royal troops sent to suppress it under the Duke of Norfolk largely defected to Wyatt. The episode showed how unpopular the Spanish match was even among professional soldiers. Wyatt advanced through Maidstone and Rochester before his final defeat at Ludgate.
