The Mercian Register records Aethelflaed built Warwick in 914. The burh at Warwick controlled the Avon valley and the routes into the East Midlands Danish territories. Warwick was to become one of the most important towns in the Midlands, and its foundation as a planned burh under Aethelflaed established its role as a military and administrative centre for Warwickshire.
