The Battle

History & Significance

By 829 Ecgberht of Wessex had brought all England under his authority. He crossed the Humber and the Northumbrians submitted at Dore near Sheffield. He was acknowledged as Bretwalda, the eighth to hold that title. However his hegemony was short-lived; by 830 Wiglaf had recovered Mercia. The period is nonetheless seen as anticipating the unified England of Edgar.
