The Battle

History & Significance

Following the Riccio murder crisis, Protestant Confederate lords assembled at Stirling to coordinate opposition to Mary Queen of Scots and pressure her on religious and political matters. The assembly was part of the series of confrontations between Mary and her nobility that led to the crisis of 1567. Stirling Castle was held by Protestant lords and served as their main base for organising resistance to Mary's pro-Catholic policies and her dependence on Bothwell.
