The Battle

History & Significance

Netley Castle, a small blockhouse on the eastern bank of Southampton Water opposite Calshot, was garrisoned around 1542 to complete the inner defence of Southampton Water. Though smaller than the major Device Forts, it formed an important link in the chain of coastal artillery covering the approaches to Southampton.
