The Battle

History & Significance

After the collapse of Bigods revolt, Sir Thomas Wharton pursued rebel remnants through Cumberland and Westmorland in February and March 1537. His forces rounded up known rebel captains and participants in the second wave, contributing to the hundred or more executions that Henry VIII demanded from the north. The Wharton pursuit was a methodical suppression that established his authority over the western border region.
