The Norse conquest of the Hebrides proceeded island by island through the mid-ninth century, with Norse warriors from Norway and Ireland establishing control over Lewis, Harris, the Uists, Barra and the Inner Isles. Gaelic-speaking inhabitants were enslaved or driven to the mainland. The Hebrides became known in Norse as the Innse Gall meaning Islands of Foreigners.
