History & Significance

In 919, Edward marched north to Manchester, repaired the old Roman town of Mamucium, and built a new burh there. This extended English military presence north of the Mersey for the first time. The operation was part of Edward's systematic programme of burh-building to create a defended frontier against Danish raiders from Northumbria and Norse-Irish forces from the Irish Sea coast.

Forces Involved

Edward's forces c.2,000–3,000; garrison size unknown.
