Whalley Abbey in the Ribble Valley was one of the largest Cistercian monasteries in the north. Abbot Paslew had participated in the Pilgrimage of Grace. His execution and the forced dissolution of Whalley in 1537 was a major act of punitive suppression. The abbey lands were immediately granted to crown favourites, reshaping Lancashire's landed society.
