The Battle

History & Significance

In 1006 a large Danish fleet used Sandwich as its base for raids deep into England. The Danes marched past Winchester (demonstrating contempt for the English court) and the garrison of Winchester is said to have watched from the walls as the Danes drove plunder past the city gates. This humiliation contributed to Aethelred's mounting crisis of authority. The use of Sandwich as a fleet base was a recurring pattern — its sheltered anchorage in the Wantsum Channel made it the best harbour on the Kent coast.
